Macroeconomic Overview – September & Q3/2026

PVI AM's September & Q3/2026 Macro Report: 9M GDP reaches 9.01%, record registered FDI of USD 50.4 billion, a return to a trade surplus and continued manufacturing expansion. However, inflationary pressures, high funding costs and continued foreign net selling remain key factors to monitor in the final quarter.

Macroeconomic Overview – September & Q3/2026

Vietnam’s macroeconomic landscape in the third quarter of 2026 demonstrated strong, broad-based acceleration across multiple sectors. Q3 GDP growth surged sharply to 9.95% year-on-year, driving the 9-month (9M) economic growth rate to 9.01%.

This marks the highest growth rate recorded since 2021 and pushes the economy closer to the ambitious 10% annual target. This robust performance was primarily spearheaded by the Industry and Construction sectors. Industrial production (IIP) maintained strong momentum, rising 14.8% year-on-year in Q3. Although there was a slight moderation in September due to weaker export orders and rising fuel costs, the manufacturing PMI remained in expansionary territory at 51.9, staying comfortably above the 50-point threshold for the 15th consecutive month.

A major highlight of the quarter was the exceptional influx of foreign capital, signaling sustained investor confidence. Registered Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) skyrocketed by 76.4% year-on-year to hit a record USD 50.4 billion in 9M2026, while disbursed FDI remained highly resilient at USD 21.1 billion (+12.1% YoY).

This FDI-led manufacturing engine directly fueled trade activities, helping Vietnam’s trade balance return to a monthly surplus of USD 1.3 billion in September—the first monthly surplus recorded since November 2025. On the domestic front, final consumption showed notable resilience with retail sales growing 13.4% (or 7.8% in real terms), largely supported by robust tourism recovery. Furthermore, public investment disbursement accelerated to nearly VND 643 trillion, fulfilling approximately 63% of the government’s annual allocation.

PVI AM analysts caution that significant pressures remain for the final quarter. Inflationary pressures have broadened beyond energy components, pushing the 9M average CPI to 4.52%, which slightly exceeds the Government’s 4.5% target.

Additionally, elevated funding costs continue to limit the room for commercial lending rate cuts. The equity market also faces sentiment headwinds from continued foreign net selling, which accumulated to USD 3.8 billion in the first nine months. Achieving the full-year 10% growth target remains challenging, as Q4 GDP would need to expand by approximately 12.5%, requiring a delicate balance between growth support and macroeconomic stability.
